The Expert Meeting Modeling Renewable Energies: Coherence Between Model Assumptions and Latest Technological Knowledge will feed directly into the SRREN, with the aim of enhancing the coherence of the report. It will be held from August 30-31st, 2009 in Oslo, Norway as a back-to-back with the LA2 Meeting of the SRREN.

An Expert Meeting on Human Settlements and Infrastructure – Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies will be held in cooperation with IPCC WG II (‘Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’). Globally, urbanization is rapidly progressing. A significant percentage of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are attributable to settlements. Simultaneously, due to their concentration of population, industry and commerce, and infrastructure assets, settlements are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Near-term demographic trends, investments in infrastructure and industry, and implementation of adaptation options to avoid, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of climate change will determine emission pathways and the long-run resilience of cities.

The Expert Meeting will explore possible pathways for assessing the role that urban planning and infrastructure investments can play in adaptation and mitigation, particularly the methods for quantitative overviews of the possible contributions of different measures and their costs. The results of the Expert Meeting will be fed into the AR5, and possibly into a Special Report on this issue. The meeting will be held in March/April 2010.

Furthermore, in collaboration with IPCC WG I (‘The Physical Science Basis’) and WG II (‘Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’) WG III intends to hold a workshop in order to facilitate a new generation of emission scenarios as part of the AR5 cycle. While the process of new scenario development is coordinated by the research community, the IPCC plays a catalyzing role in this inter-WG-effort and assesses the results.
